I've found interest in the process of manipulating the background and surrounding area within a photograph rather than the process of actually removing or replacing aspects as i don't want my final work to look and be too modified. Teun Hocks is an artist which i found who seems to do this quite a lot. His work consists of surreal almost cinematic backdrops to which he places normal people within. His photographs are usually taken in black and white within a studio setting which he then alters by coloring with transparent oil paints adding to the surreal atmosphere between each photo. Teun using himself, also invents scenarios to which almost seem impossible, puzzling and overall filled with failure.

Although Hocks doesn't use Photoshop within his works i still find them a great example of how to create surreal photography without a heavy use of manipulation tools showing a much purer and natural way of working.
